Lighten Up SGV
More than 58 percent of adults in Los Angeles County are overweight or
obese, and almost 23 percent of county children in grades 5, 7 and 9 are
obese, according to data from the Department of Public Health. And the
rate of adults considered overweight or obese in the San Gabriel Valley
area is 54.6 percent. As one of the largest health care providers in the
San Gabriel Valley, Citrus Valley Health Partners (CVHP) is witnessing
first-hand the consequences of this potentially deadly disease. From heart
attacks to diabetes to cancer, obesity is taking its toll on the hospitals'
patient populations. CVHP is committed to helping our community fight
this epidemic and to being an integral partner in elevating the health
of those we serve.
Lighten Up SGV! is a comprehensive support program for those living and
working in the San Gabriel Valley who want to lose weight and get healthy.
It includes a weight loss contest, Web site, weight loss support classes
and other events and resources for both adults and children.
As a way to encourage and motivate community members to lose weight, CVHP
is sponsoring the Lighten Up SGV weight loss challenge. It kicked off
on January 30, 2016 with a Community Weigh-In Event at Queen of the Valley
hospital in West Covina. Individuals (ages 12 and older) and teams of
5 were all eligible to compete. Participants registered for the challenge
and were officially weighed in on that day. They also received FREE blood
pressure and BMI screenings. The first phase runs for six months and prizes
will be awarded on June 25, 2016. The second phase of the challenge will
start in June and run through November 2016. Look out for more information
about the second round of the weigh-in.
THE ONLINE COMMUNITY
Lighten Up SGV! is also an online community that can be found at
www.lightenupsgv.com. This Web site is home to different discussion boards, blogs, health articles
and other weight loss resources. Users can join for FREE and create profile
pages and find/offer support through the discussion boards. Users do not
have to be participants in the weight loss contest and vice versa.
THE HEALTH SERIES
Lighten Up SGV! is also a series of FREE weight loss support and family-focused
classes provided to community members by health care professionals. These
classes are held at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina. Check
the Lighten Up website for specific dates and times. Each month, physicians,
nutritionists, physical therapists, social workers and other experts will
present a weight loss-related topic. Class topics include: fitness tips,
how to stay motivated, healthy cooking demo and much more. All classes
are open to the public and do not require participation in either the
contest or the online community.
Besides the contest, Web site and classes, CVHP will also work with its
partners to provide additional weight loss events and resources to the
community including a family-focused walk/run, exercise classes and fitness
groups. The ultimate goal of Lighten Up SGV! is to help the residents of
the San Gabriel Valley get healthier and live happier and help CVHP fulfill
our vision to be an integral partner in elevating our communities' health.
