Comprehensive Cardiac Care
Citrus Valley Heart Center offers comprehensive cardiovascular services, including the only open heart surgery program in the East San Gabriel Valley and our Citrus Valley Medical Center - Inter-Community Campus in Covina is an officially designated ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Receiving Center (SRC). We provide electrophysiology testing and interventions, cardiac catheterizations and angioplasty.
Designated STEMI Receiving Center
When a heart attack strikes, every second counts. The risk of permanent damage increases the longer the artery remains blocked. Designated by Los Angeles County as a ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Receiving Center (SRC), Inter-Community is the first and only stop for heart attack patients in the East San Gabriel Valley. The designation makes it possible for medical professionals to achieve the goal of opening a blocked heart artery within 90 minutes of when paramedics perform the first electrocardiogram (EKG) in the field.
Electrophysiology (EP) involves placing wire electrodes in the heart to measure electrical activity along the heart's conduction system and in heart muscle cells themselves. Our EP program allows us to conduct a full range of invasive procedures, including percutaneously implanted devices and catheter ablation procedures for treating and curing a variety of arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation.
Acute MI Transport A team of specially trained Cath Lab nurses is available 24 hours every day to transport patients from surrounding hospitals who require diagnostic and interventional procedures offered by the Heart Center.
A Leader in Coronary Technology
Highly trained clinicians in our Cardiac Cath Lab use specialized tests to diagnose a patient’s heart condition and are able to provide a range of appropriate therapies. The Heart Center features state-of-the-art imaging technology and technologically advanced devices like the newly approved drug-eluting stent.

Citrus Valley Medical Center recognizes that the best equipment may contribute to the best outcomes. That is why our Heart Center is always at the forefront of technology. The center is the first in the East San Gabriel Valley to offer some of the newest tools for saving lives and preventing heart attacks: the 5-Star WaveWire by Jomed Inc., the Cutting Balloon by Interventional Technologies, and the Cypherä Stent by Cordis.
The 5-Star WaveWire
This fishing-line thick wire is designed to prevent heart attacks in at-risk patients. The device measures the amount of pressure in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. This helps hospital staff quickly assess the severity of arterial blockage and what, if any, intervention is needed. It provides cardiologists with the most advanced information for interventional diagnosis and treatment. This technology helps ensure objective decision-making and cost-effective treatment, limiting risk and improving outcomes.
The Cutting Balloon
Over time, plaque may build up in the main arteries that supply blood to the heart, reducing the flow of oxygen that it needs. When the heart does not get the supply of oxygenated blood that it needs to function properly, chest pain may occur, sometimes followed by a heart attack. Medical procedures like angioplasty and the latest technologically advanced drug-eluting stents can help open a coronary artery. Those who are unable to be fitted with this device may undergo the Cutting Balloon technique.
The Cutting Balloon works by pushing away the plaque that has built up in the artery, creating a pathway for oxygenated blood to flow to the heart. The new Cutting Balloon uses half the pressure of traditional angioplasty. Consequently, the technique is less dangerous. Typically this is a minor procedure and, in most cases, the patient is released from the hospital the same day.
