Because of its amazing accuracy, this form of treatment allows for (1) higher doses of radiation therapy than were previously considered safe and (2) the treatment of tumors close to vital organs and structures that in the past would have been considered too great a safety risk.
IMRT, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, sends particular levels of radiation only to cancerous cells, as a result sparing nearby healthy cells. A computer program customizes a treatment plan based on the tumor’s shape, depth and location in the body, as well as the physician’s dose instructions.
