Special Designation to Help Citrus Valley Medical Center — Inter-Community Campus Increase Heart-Attack Survival Rates
When a heart attack strikes, every second counts. The risk of permanent damage increases the longer the artery remains blocked.
Thanks to a recent designation from Los Angeles County, paramedics are now able to take heart attack victims directly to Citrus Valley Medical Center’s Inter-Community Campus (ICC) for immediate treatment.
As of March 1, the Inter-Community Campus is now an ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Receiving Center (SRC).
The patients who are now immediately transported to Inter-Community will arrive at the new state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory more quickly than they would have before. In the past, those suffering a heart attack would have been taken to their nearest emergency department and then perhaps to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at ICC.
Inter-Community is the only hospital in the East San Gabriel Valley with this designation.
The designation should make it possible for medical professionals to achieve the goal of opening a blocked heart artery within 90 minutes of when paramedics perform the first electrocardiogram (EKG) in the field.
The move is expected to have a profound impact on East San Gabriel Valley residents.
“It’ll save lives and reduce suffering from heart disease,” said Joe Powers, R.N., executive director of the Citrus Valley Heart Center. “It makes sure that people who are having a heart attack get the care they need quickly.”
The Citrus Valley Heart Center offers a full line of cardiac services, including a new state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Lab and comprehensive post-hospital programs. The Heart Center team includes 45 cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, as well as other highly trained professionals who are board certified in nuclear medicine, interventional cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac anesthesiology, radiology and cardiology.
