Citrus Valley Health Partners Receives Grant to Expand its Palliative Care Program
Citrus Valley Health Partners has just received a $548,060 grant from the UniHealth Foundation to broaden its palliative care program by providing additional support for Latino patients and families.
The three-year grant will allow Citrus Valley Health Partners’ Director of Palliative Care David Kessler to hire two full-time bilingual palliative care nurses and one assistant to further help the Latino community served by the organization’s three hospitals and hospice, which has 2,000 nurses and 900 doctors. The grant will also provide Citrus Valley Health Partners the resources needed to educate its physicians and nurses on culturally competent end-of-life issues.
“Death and dying in our modern medical system obviously involve some of the most difficult decisions our patients face,” said Kessler. “And when you add a cultural barrier these decisions are even more overwhelming and challenging.
“We are so pleased and thankful that UniHealth Foundation saw this need and continues to support and expand palliative care for our underserved population,” he added.
