Get educated about diabetes
Diabetes is a group of diseases that brings serious life-changing consequences with it, but it does not have to be a life sentence. The Citrus Valley Health Partners Outpatient Diabetes Education Program (DEP) offers services for those who have any of the various forms of diabetes, comprehensive education for family members and information on how to avoid the onset of diabetes.
According to the California Department of Health Services, nearly 7 percent of all Los Angeles County residents have diabetes, which is about the same as the national average. In addition, African-Americans and Latinos are almost twice as likely as Caucasians to be diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes has a number of health problems associated with it, including increased risk of heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, amputations and pregnancy complications.
Citrus Valley Health Partners’ Managing Your Diabetes class, which is available for individuals or groups, equips patients with the tools necessary to live with the disease. Appointments and physician referral are required for the fee-based class. Free support groups are offered for adults with diabetes, adolescents with diabetes, parents and people specifically with type 1 diabetes. The adult support group is given in English and Spanish.
DEP is operated by a team of specially trained staff members who are there to provide comprehensive diabetes education, dietary and exercise instruction and counseling in a wide variety of areas. If necessary, patients are also treated in the Diabetes Care Unit at Foothill Presbyterian Hospital. The unit has 10 beds dedicated to diabetes care and is staffed around the clock by specially trained health-care staff.
Outpatient educational classes are offered at the Foothill Education Center, which is located at 427 W. Carroll Ave. in Glendora, or Citrus Valley Medical Center – Queen of the Valley Campus, 1115 S. Sunset Ave. in West Covina. Most insurance plans cover the cost of the classes, but patients with HMOs require pre-authorization.
Our diabetes education staff is also available to come to your community events, such as lectures and health fairs. We also hold a holiday party for children with diabetes. For more information or a list of upcoming events, call 888/456-CVHP.
Diabetes health educators are available from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information about the Diabetes Education Program, call 626/857-3477.
