What You Can Do to Avoid the Flu
You can protect yourself from the flu even if you are not included in a priority group for the flu shots this year, or if no vaccines are available. These simple actions can stop the spread of germs and help you from getting sick:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick keep your distance from others to prevent them from getting sick too.
- Stay at home when you are sick. If possible stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
- Cover your cough. Stop the spread of germs!
- Wash your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Be sure to wash your hands before eating and after using the bathroom.
- Wash your hands as soon as possible after visiting a public place such as the grocery store or gymnasium, after shaking hands with others, or after touching other objects that may have germs from a person who is sick.
- Avoid touching your nose, eyes, or mouth. Germs often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches their nose, mouth, or eyes.
- Stop the spread of germs! Healthy habits can protect everyone from getting or germs or spreading germs at home, work, or school.
- Other good habits such as getting plenty of sleep, engaging in physical activity, managing stress, drinking water, and eating good foods will help you stay healthy all year round.
